Project Overview

Ockford Ridge is a regeneration of a council estate in Godalming owned by Waverley Borough Council. It will provide new high-quality social and affordable housing over six sites up until 2025.

With phase 1 of Ockford Ridge complete, Waverley Borough Council partnered with Thakeham Group to deliver a further 17 x net-zero carbon homes at phase 2. Comprising houses deemed no longer fit for purpose, the regeneration at Ockford Ridge B will help the council meet its housing needs and demonstrate its carbon-neutral commitment.

Each affordable home features roof-integrated solar panels to generate electricity and reduce heating and lighting bills; waste heat recovery from the boiler flues and high-specification glazing to reduce heat losses through the glass. Thicker ground slab insulation and wall insulation have also been added along with modern methods of timber framed construction with lower embodied carbon.

Thakeham tasked UPOWA with providing a cost-effective and aesthetic solar solution that would ensure every property would be net-zero carbon in operation.

The UPOWA Solution

We designed a 43.52 kWp roof-integrated solar package that would enable Ockford Ridge B to meet its net-zero carbon emissions status. To achieve this, we identified the most optimal elevations of each home and designed PV arrays that best met the plot-specific kWh targets.

Our fully-accredited installation team fitted 17 x UPOWA Inline Solar systems in line with the building programme. We managed all aspects of installation, electrical works, commissioning, and handover

With UPOWA solar panels installed on every roof, the new properties generate enough electricity to compensate for the emissions used by the heating system. Across the scheme, the UPOWA Inline Solar systems produce over 38,000kWh of energy each year, saving nearly 20,000kg of carbon emissions.

The green technology in the properties reduces the need for energy even further. The LED lighting, heating controls, and heat recovery systems for the air and the hot water helps save energy and money.

UPOWA is now working in partnership with Thakeham Group to support the design and installation of solar PV, battery storage and EV charging technologies for several exciting low-carbon and zero-carbon housing schemes.

UPOWA are the final puzzle piece in making the homes we deliver, zero carbon. Their products and service not only helped us as the main contractor at Ockford Ridge, but the outcomes will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of residents – many of which return to the area from energy-hungry homes. This development is a shining example for Waverley Borough Council continuing to meet the ambitions of the climate change declaration they have made, and helping their residents be more resilient to changes in the energy market and economy.
